Temporary residence card procedure for foreigners

What is the temporary residence card procedure?

It is the process of requesting the immigration authority to issue a TRC, confirming that a foreigner may reside lawfully in Vietnam for a defined period under the work, investment or family category.

Who should obtain a TRC?

Suitable for foreigners holding a work permit, investors contributing capital to a Vietnamese enterprise, or relatives (spouse/children) of someone residing lawfully, who need a long-term and stable stay.

Temporary residence card process

  1. Determine the card category and check the document conditions.
  2. Prepare documents proving the residence category (work permit, investment certificate, family documents, etc.).
  3. The enterprise or sponsor submits the file at the Immigration Department/Office.
  4. Monitor and supplement the file if requested.
  5. Receive the temporary residence card for the approved period.

Documents to prepare

  • Valid passport and a valid visa.
  • Certified application form for the temporary residence card.
  • Documents proving the residence category (work permit, investment registration certificate, proof of family relationship).
  • Photos and legal documents of the sponsoring entity.

The temporary residence card procedure follows Law No. 47/2014/QH13 (as amended and supplemented by Law No. 51/2019/QH14 and Law No. 23/2023/QH15) on entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam.
